Welcome! This is a blog about random technical projects, both hardware and software.
I started this blog as a way to document my hobby projects for the benefit of myself and others. My hope is that writing public blog posts instead of private text notes will encourage me to create more detailed and polished records.
All of my hobby projects are technical in nature, spanning the range from writing software to designing and assembling electronics. This blog is thus restricted to technical matters, and may at times be terse.
My handle is ‘nickersonm’ across the internet; I can be contacted via [email protected].
I am a physicist by training, with a background in academia and precision measurement. My current day job is in experimental R&D, usually involving lasers.
My interests are broad: almost anything related to physics, data analysis, computer science, and cool widgets.
I read voraciously across several genres2, usually but not solely fiction. Hard SF is always good3, soft SF and fantasy can be fun and engaging, and contemporarily written histories4 are frequently insightful.
When creating something, I generally care about:
- Minimalist (lazy) interface, typically CLI for software
- Lots of configuration options
- Clean and optimal design: I prefer spending extra time to make something ‘properly’, rather than just ‘functional’
- In general, much of the UNIX philosophy
When looking for an existing product, I tend to prefer:
- Clean/minimalist design and interface
- Lots of configurable details
- Free, preferably without a paid version (implies a lack of features in the free version)
- Free and open source, as this frequently implies at least some of the other criteria
